Biography

Hello. My name is Travis N. Tom, an award-winning designer and illustrator for print and Web based projects. I specialize in iconography and enjoy designing corporate identity, microsites and traditional print work. I graduated from the University of Georgia, Athens in 1992 earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design. The Summer of 1992 I interned in NYC as an assistant to Susan Roberts painting murals for The Salad Bowl restaurant in Times Square. The architect and designer has since won 9 industry awards for this project including a cover feature of Interior Design magazine November 1993.

In 1993 I started my first job as an in-house designer for the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta. October 1996 I was hired as a senior Web designer at Orbit Network, a startup in the travel industry. The art department was in Augusta but in 1998 we were relocated to company headquarters in Novato, CA (20 miles North of San Francisco). The days of Orbit ended in October 1999 which gave me the chance to pursue a freelance career in the Bay Area contracting with Netscape, PeopleSoft and Documentum on icon projects. In early 2000, Money Magazine contacted me for my first publication assignment. By March of 2000 I decided to move to Atlanta where I continued to freelance and landed another publication assignment to design a set of 14 icons for HOW's Self Promotion Annual 2001-2002. Due to the recession I relocated back to Augusta in August 2001 where I have been working as an independent contractor from my home-based studio.

Since August 2004 I have been working as an art director for a small creative group located in Aiken, SC. Good people, great work. We have won some local and national awards for our print publications and campaigns. Three sets of my icons are set to be appear in a design book titled "Icons 2" published by Rockport Publishers, Fall 2006.

While I was in Atlanta I founded the Creative Postcard Club (September 2000) and self-publish www.CreativePostcardClub.com. The CPC was covered in HOW's Self-Promotion Annual 2001 and was a follow-up feature in HOW's Self-Promotion Annual 2002 issue.

I am always in the pursuit of making new contacts and collaborating with clients in and beyond the Augusta market. I work on a Mac G4 platform and my software of choice are Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign and QuarkXpress. I am looking at the Mac Mini as my next computer for home.
